Admissions & Prerequisites

Students planning to enter nurse practitioner programs at Western University of Health Sciences should plan ahead carefully. The application window runs from December 1 through May 1 each year for fall terms. The university currently waives application fees, but all documents must reach them by the deadline.

Candidates must meet these core requirements:

• Appropriate degree background (varies by program)
  • Post-Masters FNP Certificate: Master of Science in Nursing or Masters/Doctorate degree from a nationally accredited program
  • DNP/FNP: Bachelor of Science or Master of Science in Nursing from a board approved program

• Minimum 3.0 GPA overall and in last 60 semester/90 quarter units

• Active, unencumbered RN license in the state where clinical hours will be completed[122][123]
• One year (minimum 1800 hours) of experience as a Registered Nurse[122][123][124]

Students applying to the DNP/FNP program without 1800 hours of RN experience may still qualify. They must follow a modified curriculum and complete these hours by the end of their first year.

The application package should include a resume/CV (using their template), scholarly writing sample (for DNP programs), and two reference forms from employers or faculty members[123]. While formal interviews aren’t required, the Admissions Committee might reach out to discuss your application[142].

International students must meet additional criteria. These include evaluation of non-US coursework by an approved service, proof of legal US residency before starting, and possibly a TOEFL exam (minimum scores: 80 for Internet-Based test, 213 for Computer-Based test)[122][123][124]. In spite of that, students who completed specific US-based communication courses or hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited US institution don’t need TOEFL scores[122][123][124].
